Today we are going to visit an unusual village in which you will not find any restaurants or souvenir shops and no beautiful traditional houses … You may wonder, why to waste your time visiting this village, but here is the answer to this question: long time ago, Vikla had better times and the ruins of the old houses, have something amazing inside.
In ancient times, people use to live here, life was seething, but now there are only the ruins of the houses and only the church survived. The name Vikla is translated as “looking forward”. Previously, locals had the opportunity to observe the valley and the invaders, who were trying to get close to the village, and take refuge in the dense forests in time.
Now, there are no forests around the village: for many years, the locals used to cut down the forests and sell the trees (sold it, and that), that’s why the wealth of nature have been exhausted. Also, the village itself, for unknown reasons, has come to a desolation. At the moment, only one person is registered here, the head of the Vikla kids’ golf academy, which is located on the outskirts of the former village.
The village, was not too big in the ancient times and now, there are only small destroyed houses with rooves and thickets of cactus with ripe fruits. The only surviving building in the village is a local church, which was built 600-700 years ago. The church has been carefully restored and now is open all the time for visitors. If you leave few coins, you can even ask for a prayer, and it will be served by the priest, who will come in your absence. By the way, until 2008, the village had the local school, but after the great fire, only the church survived.
Slowly walking through the narrow streets of the former village, you will be surprised how much the spirit of history pervades the place. You seem to hear voices, you feel exactly how the village was while people were living here.
Well, we’re going below, to the place where now Vikla Golf Club spreads. Our way, goes to the old village well, where the locals used to spend the most part of their lives. They used to come here for water, to wash clothes and they were spending days nearby. Even now, looking into the well, you will appreciate its depth and see the water on the bottom. Unfortunately, if you want to get it and enjoy its coolness, you certainly will not succeed.
You will find a large variety of fruit trees here, olives and almonds, pistachios and pears … If you’re like us, come here in autumn, and you will have a good chance to take part in the harvest. We managed to collect handfuls of ripe almonds, which, by the way, are the largest of any of those we have ever seen in Cyprus.
Well, this is the end of our walk through the abandoned village. Finally, we will tell you about one of the legends: pay attention to a huge stone at the entrance of the village. They say that one of the queens of Cyprus is buried under it — who exactly, nobody knows. When the queen and her entourage drove through the village, there was an attack and the invaders wanted to seize the treasure. Protectors were able to fight back, but they couldn’t save the queen, who was buried under a stone, along with the treasure. Who knows, maybe there is still a gold treasure hidden in this place …
